But the interesting part of the column had to do with an anecdote he shared, which I’ll paraphrase here.
He ran into a poker player he’d known for a while, and he asked his buddy if he was going to get in on the game he was playing in. His buddy replied that he didn’t want to play in the same gameas Neuman because he was always winning.
Neuman explained to his buddy that no one wins all the time, and his friend replied, well, every time I see you at the table, you have more chips than anyone else.
In other words, Neuman was giving off the appearance of being a winner by virtue of having the largest chip stack at the table.
The author of the column went on to explain that he always buys in for the maximum at a no-limit Texas hold’em game and at least five times the minimum in a limit hold’em game. I’m not going tolimit this post to those two recommendations, but if you’re in a hurry, those are the first two recommendations I have for you.
- You should buy in for the maximum at a no-limit Texas hold’em game
- You should buy in for at least five times the minimum at a limit Texas hold’em game
He lists several reasons why this is a good idea.
Texas Holdem Chips Worth
- You look like a winner
- This is good because the good players try to avoid getting heads-up with the other good players.
- You don’t have to buy more chips
- This also makes you look like a stronger player. Buying chips at the table makes you look like a loser.
- Most players infer how good you are by the size of your chip stack
- Players who’ve just sat down don’t know what you bought in for.
- Your bluffs and semi-bluffs are more likely to succeed
- This leads to winning more pots and growing your stack even more.

He also points out that some players might notice how much you’ve bought in for, but a lot of the other players at the table are paying no attention. They’re listening to music or watching sportson television or just chatting with the other rounders.

And the players who buy into the game later don’t know what you bought in for because they weren’t there when you sat down.
